ABOUT MASSAPEQUA PARK, NY
Massapequa Park is an incorporated village in the town of Oyster Bay, located on the south shore of Long Island, New York. With loads of nearby amenities, excellent public schools, and easy access to the shore, this Nassau County gem is known as a great place to put down roots and raise a family.
Once home to Algonquin natives, the area that is now Massapequa Park was settled when German residents moved out of Brooklyn to find more harmonious surroundings in the nineteenth century. The village was incorporated in 1931. Massapequa Park once had its own airport, the Fitzmaurice Flying Field, named after James Fitzmaurice, one of the three-man crew who made the first trans-Atlantic flight. It’s also home to some of the largest model kit houses Sears Roebuck ever sold.
Today, the village is an affluent community dominated by Italian, Irish, and German Americans. Both the median household income and the value of a single family home are roughly twice the national average; 40 percent of the residents are college graduates. Public schools here are rated as some of the best on Long Island, including top-rated Massapequa High School, which, according to Niche, boasts the number one best high school sports ranking in the state of New York.
Typical single family homes for sale in Massapequa Park reflect the area’s post-War real estate boom, which culminated with the construction of Massapequa’s Sunrise Mall (now Westfield Sunrise Mall) in 1973. There are pristine rows of split levels, Capes, and ranches. Homes for sale (listings) tend to be less expensive north of Sunrise Highway and much pricier as one heads toward the ocean. In the Bar Harbour section south of Merrick Boulevard, houses for sale easily top one million dollars.
Village pubs and restaurants, like Johnny McGorey’s Pub, the Good Life LI, Dark Horse Tavern and Ephesus Mediteranian & Turkish cuisine provide grownups with a nearby place for date night. Beaches, parks, nature hikes, and shopping are all conveniently located within five miles of the village, allowing Massapequa Park to retain its quiet village feel while at the same time being just a stone’s throw from the action.
