Once home to Algonquin natives, the area that is now Massapequa Park was settled when German residents moved out of Brooklyn to find more harmonious surroundings in the nineteenth century. The village was incorporated in 1931. Massapequa Park once had its own airport, the Fitzmaurice Flying Field, named after James Fitzmaurice, one of the three-man crew who made the first trans-Atlantic flight. It’s also home to some of the largest model kit houses Sears Roebuck ever sold.
Today, the village is an affluent community dominated by Italian, Irish, and German Americans. Both the median household income and the value of a single family home are roughly twice the national average; 40 percent of the residents are college graduates. Public schools here are rated as some of the best on Long Island, including top-rated Massapequa High School, which, according to Niche, boasts the number one best high school sports ranking in the state of New York.
