What’s Happening on Long Island This Weekend? (Feb 27–28, 2026)

Because Winter’s Almost Over… But Not Quite.

There’s something about the last weekend of February on Long Island. It’s that awkward in-between season where you’re emotionally ready for spring, but your weather app is still humbling you. The question becomes: do you stay home and reorganize a drawer you’ll never open again… or do you actually go do something?

Good news. This weekend gives you options.

Let’s start with something wholesome — like, aggressively wholesome. On Saturday, February 28, the Camp W Open House is happening from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. If you have kids (or you just miss the glory days of summer camp snacks), this is your preview of warmer days ahead. Expect pizza, drinks, giveaways, face painting, and that “maybe we should sign them up now before it sells out” energy. It’s summer optimism… in a hoodie.

Animal lovers, this one’s for you. Also on Saturday, February 28, the Long Island Pet Expo takes over the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena. It’s basically a convention for people who love their pets more than most humans — and honestly, fair. There will be vendors, entertainment, and probably at least one dog dressed better than you. No judgment.

If you want something interactive (and slightly educational so you can feel productive), the Hidden Hearts Scavenger Hunt runs all weekend at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. It kicks off Friday, February 27, and continues through Sunday during regular museum hours. You get to explore exhibits while solving clues — which is basically turning a museum trip into a mini adventure movie starring you.

Over in Cold Spring Harbor, the Whaling Museum & Education Center is hosting its Sea Survival Challenge from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM all weekend. It’s hands-on, it’s interactive, and it might make you feel dramatically more prepared for a shipwreck than you’ll ever need to be. Still counts as life skills.

For families with younger kids, the Little Learners Workshop at the Planting Fields Foundation in Oyster Bay happens on Friday, February 27. It’s one of those sweet, nature-based learning sessions that makes you feel like you’re raising future environmentalists instead of iPad addicts.

Feeling intellectual? There’s a Telescope Lecture in East Hampton on Friday, February 27, where you can learn how to actually use a telescope properly. Because let’s be honest, most of us would point it at the moon and hope for the best.

If history and culture are more your thing, there’s a Black History & Culture: Revolutionary Legacies event on Friday, February 27 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Bethany Arts Community in Ossining. It’s meaningful, reflective, and a great way to engage with stories that deserve attention beyond just one month.

And of course, if your weekend plan simply involves getting out of the house without freezing, indoor classics never fail. The Railroad Museum of Long Island in Riverhead and Greenport is open Saturday and Sunday — perfect for train lovers, history buffs, or anyone who appreciates a solid model train display.

Or you could go simple. Take a winter walk at Bethpage State Park. Breathe in the cold air. Pretend you enjoy brisk weather. It builds character.

So whether you’re chasing dogs at a pet expo, solving clues at a museum, planning summer camp, learning about sea survival, or just trying to prove you still leave the house in February — this weekend has range.

And hey, if you’re out exploring and you drive through a neighborhood that makes you think, “Hmm… I could see myself here…”

You already know the next move.

Now go enjoy the weekend. Spring is close enough to taste. Probably.
